From Donnie Darko to Spider-Man – Jake Gyllenhaal never disappoints.
Since the beginning of the press tour of the movie Spiderman: Away from Home (2019) Jake Gyllenhaal opened up a new way for viewers. Of course, the actor never seemed to be a boring character, but lately a record number of eccentric and strange videos with him have appeared on the Internet. Like his sister Maggie, Jake built his career playing non-standard roles in respected indie films and the movie Spider-Man: Away from home , perhaps the most high-budget and large-scale project on which he worked. This crazy press tour shows how Jake Gyllenhaal is dedicated to his craft, and also confirms that he is a funny and charming eccentric.
Donnie Darko (Richard Kelly, 2001)
One of the first films of Gyllenhaal, which received great fame, was Richard Kelly’s Donnie Darko science-fiction film . The main character can change the time and fate, he is faced with deep philosophical questions about time and the end of the world, with themes that are a heavy burden on the shoulders of a teenager from the sunny town of Virginia. Gyllenhaal became a real discovery in the role of Donny, demonstrating his acting talent to the world.
Bubble Boy (Blair Hayes, 2001)
Okay, I agree, this film is not suitable for the “best films” list. The bubble guy is a rather tasteless and awkward comedy in which Jake Gyllenhaal plays a boy who was born without an immune system, with naive eyes and a great sense of humor. That is why the film falls into the list, the young Gyllenhaal continues to impress the audience with his talents.
The Good Girl (Miguel Arteta, 2002)
A year later, Gyllenhaal is removed along with Jennifer Aniston in the movie The Good Girl . In the role of Holden, Jake was able to demonstrate his skills as a romantic hero. However, this is not just a melodrama, Gyllenhaal shows a thoughtful and complex acting game, as Holden’s health deteriorates and takes a tragic turn for the hero. The actor evokes the viewer’s sympathy for this unfortunate and inexperienced young man.
Brokeback Mountain (Ang Lee, 2005)
Grief, longing and the struggle for self-knowledge underlie Gillenhaul’s acting work in such films as Brokeback Mountain (2005) and Love and other drugs (Edward Zwick, 2010). In Brokeback Mountain, Jillenhall plays a rancher’s assistant who has a relationship with a rodeo cowboy. The acting duet of Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal is inimitable when their heroes have to suffer because of their romantic connection under conditions of conservatism and cruel homophobia.
Captives (Denis Villeneuve, 2013)
In the films of Captive (Denis Villeneuve, 2013), The Enemy (Denis Villeneuve, 2013) and Stringer (Dan Gilroy, 2014) Jake Gyllenhaal transforms into darker and perverted characters.
Detective Loki is a lonely and obsessive person, his aggression and rage when he faces face to face with criminals hinting at the desire for violence that is hidden under his nervous appearance.
Stringer (Dan Gilroy, 2014)
This same dark entity, which is hidden under external innocence, reappears in Stringer , where Gillenhaal plays Louis Bloom, a news operator. As Bloom becomes more aware of his dark side, crossing all the borders in search of news, stealing and blackmailing, his mask begins to crack, which is literally shown in the scene where the hero screams at himself in the bathroom.
The Zodiac (David Fincher, 2007)
It would be unfair to bypass this film. Based on a true serial killer story – this is a great thriller from David Fincher. The picture is a quiet, terrible and unusually painful study of double obsession: the desire of one person to kill and the search for truth by others.
Velvet Chainsaw (Dan Gilroy, 2019)
In one of his latest works, Gyllenhaal plays a stylish art critic Morph Vandevalt, who leads the boring life of a bohemian party-goer. His girlfriend accidentally finds a whole warehouse of unknown works in the apartment of the deceased neighbor and Morf realizes that they have discovered a genius. However, it turns out that art is not always harmless and the hero of Gyllenhaul begins to investigate the identity of the author.
Gyllenhaul’s latest film Spiderman: Away from home (2019) I still have to watch, but I think the actor here does not disappoint his fans, although it is probably unusual for many to see him as a superhero.
