The Witcher 3 gave gamers a fair amount of challenge while maintaining fun, but these RPGs are even more challenging.
As you play The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt on Deathly Difficulty, be prepared for horror. You gain experience points at a slower pace on, and you have to try and fail in almost every fight.
These days, Dark Souls has become the benchmark for judging how difficult a game is. Any RPG that claims to be difficult must pass the Dark Souls test before being taken seriously. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is easier than Dark Souls, but harder than Skyrim.
These are ten RPGs harder than The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.

Baldur’s Gate 2: Shadows Of Amn
Back when BioWare was developing the original Baldur’s Gate games, they decided to make the sequel more complex and less linear. Baldur’s Gate 2: Shadows of Amn requires more skill and preparation.
For the most part, Baldur’s Gate 2: Shadows of Amn’s reception was positive, with many critics praising the story. Newcomers to Baldur’s Gate should start with the original or stick with The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.
Divinity: Original Sin II
Divinity: Original Sin II will be a challenge for those new to the RPG genre, even if you’re playing on easy difficulty. Perhaps this is why the developers of Divinity: Original Sin II implemented a quick save feature.
Quicksave lets you save data before turn-based battles so you can repeat them over and over. With that said, this is a fun game under painstaking difficulty.
Don’t be discouraged playing Fallout 2. The start is very rocky, but the game softens by the middle.
There is also a spike in complexity towards the end. At least the first Fallouts are consistent throughout. Fallout’s beginning is easy, and the middle is more or less difficult, but the end takes effort. Fallout 2’s random spikes in difficulty make it tougher than The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.
Lords Of The Fallen
Before you dismiss it as another Souls-like, know that Lords of the Fallen brings enough difficulty to be appropriate. Some criticize the game for its sluggish gameplay and slow pace, but the flaws hide a decent game.
Lords of the Fallen has grueling boss fights. If you’ve never played this type of action RPG, Lords of the Fallen is a challenge. If you have experience, you can count the Fallen Lords easier than The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.
Pillars of eternity
You will find that the lightest sections of Pillars Of Eternity are the middle and end. The game becomes more relaxed as soon as you collect a full party.
However, if you are not even remotely familiar with this type of RPG, you will likely find Pillars Of Eternity more demanding than The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. While this is a challenge for most players, it is recommended to play in Hard Mode for a rewarding experience.
Bloodborne is one of the hardest and darkest games in the genre. You will face numerous bosses, while The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has fewer bosses that present a challenge.
Typically, you can get through The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt with patience and knowledge of spells and attacks. It is the same here, but it should be multiplied several times.
You may have noticed that the above screenshot is from the Demon Souls remake trailer and not from the original. A remake of Demon Souls will be released for the PlayStation 5.
This is debatable, but many would agree that Demon Souls is more difficult than Dark Souls. Enemy encounters and progression are more tiring in Demon Souls, while Dark Souls bosses are more challenging. Regardless of how you look at it, Demon Souls is significantly more difficult than The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.
Team Ninja, the developer of games such as Ninja Gaiden and Dead or Alive, decided to jump on a speeding Souls-like train. Unsurprisingly, a reputable development team has managed to create a matching Souls-like. Nioh may be the hardest game on this list due to the multiple boss fights (like Shima Sakon and Oda Nobunaga).
Compared to The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Nioh is more challenging. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is known for its gripping history, while Nioh has an unforgiving fight.
Wizardry IV: The Return Of Werdna
At a time when video game developers were recovering from the Great Video Game Crash of the 80s, Wizardry IV: The Return of Werdna was an almost impossible RPG. Video games were considered a fad, and it was unclear if the industry would ever recover.
Wizardry IV: The Return of Werdna was designed to appeal to seasoned gamers who have played other fantasy games. Beginners will fall flat due to painstaking difficulty. This RPG is much more difficult than The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.
Dark Souls: Prepare To Die Edition
While the trend is heading towards the increasingly lightweight Dark Souls games, the original Dark Souls isn’t an easy walk. No wonder many people call Dark Souls “prepare to die”. Many would agree that Ornstein & Smaug is one of the fiercest boss battles in video games.
Fighting two bosses at once in Dark Souls is like fighting two huge monkeys at once in Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. The difference is that each boss has a unique set of moves in Dark Souls. Additionally, Ornstein or Smaug become more powerful when one of them is killed. Preparing for death – that’s putting it mildly.
