How do you feel about gaming crossovers? When different worlds – be they games, comics, or even cartoons – collide together in one project?
Of course, crossovers are initially created with the aim of expanding the audience of franchises. But this does not mean that such games cannot be of high quality and interesting.
Today I want to tell you about five games that perfectly combine several universes. Some of them have become the backbone of successful game series, and some simply allow you to play as a variety of characters from dozens of universes.

1. X-Men vs. Street fighter
In our time, fighting games are full of crossovers. In the new parts of Mortal Kombat, heroes always appear that are not directly related to the series. So modern “fights” no longer surprise with crossovers, because it has become the norm. Unless Tekken X Street Fighter is still coming out. What I don’t believe in.
But in the second half of the 90s, Capcom surprised many when it released X-Men vs. Street Fighter. This crossover surprised with the scrupulous attitude of the developers, because for the voice acting they invited actors from the original cartoon, which many could see on Fox Kids, Jetix or just in the morning on Ren-TV 20 years ago. Even if I did not see this cartoon in the original, it is still impressive.
And the game itself is of high quality. The gameplay of Street Fighter was taken as a basis, in which the iconic X-Men were added. Their abilities are well implemented and perfectly convey the characters from the cartoon. In addition, for fans of the plot, there is an ending for each character, which can be seen during the passage of the single mode. At the end, there will be a battle with the Apocalypse, which also came from the X-Men universe.
The game became successful. Both on arcade machines and on PlayStation 1. It is X-Men vs. Street Fighter was the progenitor of the Marvel vs. Capcom.
2. Kingdom Hearts series
Speaking of crossovers, I cannot remain silent about a series of games like Kingdom Hearts. This mix of Disney and Final Fantasy characters is a complete crossover game with its own world and characters. But the worlds of Square Enix games and Disney cartoons are important here. Now the universe also includes characters from The World Ends with You, as well as from Pixar cartoons.
Unlike Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts offers more dynamic action / RPG style gameplay. This will delight those who are not indifferent to the world of the “finale”, but do not like the turn-based combat from this series.
The success of the series gave rise to a huge number of spin-offs: games for portable consoles, mobile phones, and browsers. It even has its own card game and manga.
However, there are only three numbered games. They best portray a mix of the worlds of Square and Disney. Branches from the series are more focused on revealing the lore of Kingdom Hearts itself. In order not to get confused in the interweaving of the plot, there is even a diagram that shows which part occurs in which time interval.
Perhaps there is no more successful crossover among video games.
3. Lego Dimensions
In 2015, Traveller’s Tales created an epic crossover set in the LEGO world. There are dozens of worlds in Lego Dimensions: Adventure Time, Harry Potter, Ghostbusters, Beetlejuice, The Lord of the Rings, The Simpsons, Portal 2, characters from DC comics and many other universes.
The only negative is the cost of the game. More precisely, the game is not so dying, but the characters for it are bought according to the toys-to-life system. The game set includes a special USB device that reads LEGO figures. After being read, the character appears in the game. Sets of such figures are decent.
Of course, for some, this can be explained by the fact that here you not only buy a character for the game, but also a collectible figure. In my opinion, this is still an expensive hobby.
If you do not talk about the price, then here is a very interesting crossover, made in a typical style for LEGO games. Quite interesting, plus the ability to play co-op. In 2017, interest in the game faded. Additional content was no longer released, and the game is now pretty hard to find.
4. Mario & Sonic At The Olympic Games
The collision of the Sega and Nintendo worlds sounds extremely interesting for many who have found the times of Sega Mega Drive and NES. Fight Sonic vs. Mario, Dr. Eggman vs. Bowser. Or run Amy Rose against Princess Peach. All this was allowed by Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games.
Timed to coincide with the 2008 Beijing Olympics, this game has become a successful crossover. The circulation exceeded both Sega and Nintendo’s expectations. Although the critics’ ratings were pretty average. As a result, this experiment became a full-fledged series, in which there are already 6 full-fledged games. The last was Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, which is unfortunately unique. After all, there were no Olympic Games this year.
If you have long wanted to clash the main faces of the Sega and Nintendo consoles, but did not know how – the Mario & Sonic At The Olympic Games series will help you. You will need either a Nintendo console, a Wii emulator, or even a Nintendo DS.
5. Mortal Kombat vs. DC
Another fighting game that has spawned a new and highly successful series of games. Behind the controversial title of Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe stands as the progenitor of the already very famous Injustice series. Although formally the game belongs to the Mortal Kombat series.
Among other things, the gameplay of Mortal Kombat vs. DC became the basis for the beloved Mortal Kombat 9, which breathed new, bright life into the old series.
The top of the crossover iceberg in this game was the main villain – Dark Kahn. It’s a mix of Shao Kahn (Mortal Kombat) and Darkseid (DC). The plot of the game shows the creation of this creature. Dark Kahn connects the worlds of Mortal Kombat and the DC Universe, while making the representatives of these worlds balanced. Superman can now quite snatch away from Jax, and Raiden is vulnerable even to the Joker.
The financial success of Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe made it clear to the developers that players are still interested in good story-driven fighting games. A new franchise has opened for NetherRealm Studios – Injustice. Now the DC comics went their own way, and the MK fighters went their own. It was this crossover that gave them this opportunity. It’s just a pity, MK vs. DC remained a console exclusive of the previous generation and it is not so easy to play it now.
