Berlin does not agree with the new US sanctions on Nord Stream 2, said the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA of Germany) Heiko Maas. According to him, it is wrong to impose sanctions against our partners, and these actions threaten the EU’s sovereignty.
US Secretary of State Michael Pompeo said on July 15 that Nord Stream 2 and Turkish Stream may be included in the projects that fall under the Counter America’s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA). Investments and other cooperation will be subject to US sanctions. The main blow will fall on the five European companies financing Nord Stream 2 – Shell, Engie, Uniper, Wintershall and OMV.
“By statements that European enterprises are also threatened by sanctions, the US government ignores the right and sovereignty of Europe to independently decide where and how to get electricity. European energy policy is done in Europe, not in Washington. We unequivocally reject extraterritorial sanctions, ”said Mr. Maas in a statement (quoted by Interfax).
According to him, the FRG government has been holding talks with the United States in recent weeks. “At the same time, we clearly demonstrated our position. We consider it wrong to impose sanctions on partners, ”said the Foreign Minister of Germany.
