Hong Kong’s head of administration, Carry Lam, agreed with the region’s national security law that China’s government had previously passed, Reuters said. According to Lam, the law closes the gaping hole in the region’s legislation and does not undermine its autonomy.
She said that preventive measures will concern only the “extremely small” group of violators who pose a threat to the state system. The Hong Kong leader emphasized that the region suffered from violence inflated by outside forces – and “no central government can turn a blind eye to such threats to sovereignty.”
The fact that the Chinese authorities adopted the sensational law was announced earlier on June 30. He will allow Beijing to demand the extradition of the most dangerous radicals. On June 26, it became known that the United States introduced new anti-Chinese sanctions because of Beijing’s encroachment on Hong Kong’s autonomy. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced that the US government has introduced “visa restrictions for former and current CCP members who are considered responsible or implicated in undermining Hong Kong’s autonomy.”
Great Britain, which ruled Hong Kong until 1997, urged China to respect the autonomy of the region, and the United States called the bill a catastrophic decision. Hong Kong returned to China in 1997. According to the joint declaration of China and Britain, the city was promised wide autonomy for 50 years. Thanks to this status, Hong Kong has established special relations with the United States.
