NGC 5215

NGC 5215 is a gravitationally bound double galaxy; NGC 5215A is 13.2 mag bright, NGC 5215B has an apparent brightness of 12.9 mag. Both are lenticular galaxies of the Hubble type “S0” (transition from elliptical to spiral ) in the constellation of the hounds . NGC 5215B, the brighter of the two galaxies, was discovered by John Herschel on June 3, 1836 , with an 18-inch mirror telescope that featured “eF and S; has two stars less than 1 diameter of neb, distant one (by diagram) south and one preceding ” [1] listed.
