Rowling and more than a hundred rulers of thoughts demanded to abolish the “boycott culture”

Increased attention to the requirements of opponents of racism, sexism and capitalism can lead to a restriction of freedom of speech and discussion. About 150 leading intellectuals of the world hold this opinion, including the author of Harry Potter Joan Rowling, philosophers Francis Fukuyama and Noam Chomsky, grandmaster Garry Kasparov and even feminist Gloria Steinem.

A letter from social activists in which they called “to preserve the opportunity to sincerely disagree with something without serious professional consequences for oneself” is published by Harperʼs magazine. Thus, according to signatories, reporters in the West are sometimes fired for publishing controversial materials, are forbidden to write about certain issues, their “unsuccessful reservations” also play against the “sharks of the pen”.

As a result, writers, artists and journalists, fearing for their “well-being”, begin to be guided by self-censorship, the statement says.

Intellectuals demand the abolition of the so-called culture of boycott (сancel culture), or deprivation of well-known people of all merit if they made ambiguous statements or actions unacceptable from the point of view of morality.
