2003 gave the world a couple of stunning game masterpieces of all time, became the starting point for very successful franchises to this day, and also developed previously released games with additional content. Therefore, it will be extremely difficult to keep within the traditional format – top 10 -.
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
Metascore – 93 / User Score – 9.0
Ask any Star Wars fan what is the best game in the series and in most cases the answer will be Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. In the olden days, BioWare was able to draw attention to itself and create a truly worthwhile product. Star War: KOTOR, unlike most games in the Star Wars universe, sends the player back to the times of the Old Republic, which is known to be part of the expanded universe.
But most importantly, with what love for the universe and fans of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic was presented. The player went from a commoner to a Jedi master, who was opposed to a powerful villain – Darth Malak. Well, having your own ship at your disposal is a separate pleasure.

Call of Duty
Metascore – 91 / User Score – 8.5
The Call of Duty series today is not just a “Pipeline Shooter”, but also an insanely popular game with a story mode of the level of Hollywood blockbusters, and there is nothing to say about the popularity of multiplayer. However, the most surprising thing is that little has changed in 17 years. The setting has changed, the technical part has improved, but the essence remains the same.
The first part of Call of Duty, released in 2003, showed the war as effectively and dynamically as possible. Every minute of screen time was devoted to action: either a shootout with overwhelming enemy forces, or a skirmish with a tank with a “saber bald”. All this in realistic scenery and with an abundance of pathos. Something in our world remains unchanged.
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time
Metascore – 89 / User Score – 8.5
On January 21, 2021, a remake of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time will be released, which means that everyone who did not catch the original game will have a great chance to catch up.
And it is definitely worth doing it. History is literally imbued with the “East”, creating the atmosphere of the “Thousand and One Nights”. Time management looks good even today, and the level of acrobatic stunts is still exploited by many eminent franchises, because in fact “Sands of Time” is the ancestor of modern parkour games.
Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne
Metascore – 86 / User Score – 8.9
At first glance, Payne’s second adventure was not much different from the first. Well, judge for yourself: almost the same set of weapons, the same storytelling using comic style and the same endless jumps in slo-mo. However, the story was presented in such a way that it was difficult to break away from it, all the shortcomings of the first part were fixed, and jumping with time dilation simply could not get bored. Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne is just work on bugs, but these bugs belonged to a game literally ahead of its time.
Beyond Good & Evil
Metascore – 86 / User Score – 8.9
Beyond Good & Evil defies genre classification. Starting to play action, in a second you could find yourself in an adventure, and where you will be in the next second is a real mystery. But I simply could not think about it, because of the huge variety I had to greedily gaze at the monitor and absorb every frame. Usually such a pastime quickly becomes boring, but thanks to the skill of Michel Ansel and his team, the feeling of euphoria did not pass until the credits.
Silent Hill 3
Metascore – 85 / User Score – 8.6
Of course, many fans will say that Silent Hill 3 is the worst part in the series. However, if the first part was remembered for its originality, and the second for its depth, then the third one could simply settle in your nightmares for a while and discourage any desire to visit shopping centers. All the cliches from the world of horror are collected in one place and presented in such a way that the “Blair Witch” will be envious.
Need for Speed: Underground
Metascore – 82 / User Score – 8.4
On July 21, 2001, the film “Double Fast and the Furious” literally burst into the Russian box office. By the time Need for Speed: Underground was released on November 17, 2003, all these passions had not yet cooled down. As a result, shiny sports cars racing at breakneck speeds through the city at night literally took over the computers and consoles of all gamers of the time.
The simpsons hit & run
Metascore – 82 / User Score – 8.1
Is there a cartoon that has a stronger impact on world culture than The Simpsons? The release of The Simpsons Hit & Run, however, did not have such a radical impact on the world and the gaming industry. This is just a comical variation in the spirit of GTA-like games, but with its own chips. So in the game there were no weapons to create riots in the streets, but there were cars that could do a lot of trouble. In general, if The Simpsons Hit & Run was launched by a person not familiar with the universe, he didn’t care what to do, but if a Simpsons fan took the gamepad in his hands, his head was literally dizzy from the abundance of references and black humor. You could entertain yourself with interesting tasks, activities and a large open world, which exactly repeated the beloved Springfield by many.
Metascore – 69 / User Score – 7.3
If you need to talk about the aforementioned games in the past tense, because it is unlikely that many will dare to run them on their computer today, then we need to talk about EVE Online in the present, because the game is still more alive than all living things. Of course, back in 2003, the space simulator looked completely different, but even then the game had unique mechanics that were not found in any form in competitors. The game did not have a plot, because it was created by the players themselves, the economy existed according to its own rules and was again regulated by gamers. Of course, EVE Online is constantly evolving and today looks completely different than 17 years ago, only the complexity of the game and the absence of huge budgets do not allow it to compete on equal terms with modern projects.
Metascore – 50 / User Score – 8.1
Could Postal 2 arrive in 2020? Definitely not. A more scandalous, cruel and politically incorrect game still needs to be looked for. Postal 2 made fun of the most painful themes of American reality of the time, which are perceived even more acutely today. However, for the rest of the world, such a project meant only one thing – the ability to blow off steam. Coming home from work, school or any other place angry at the whole world Postal 2 gave the opportunity to relax.
Out of the set, it is worth mentioning 4 more projects
Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne is a continuation of the history of Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos made in the best traditions of Blizzard.
Command & Conquer: Generals – the allied forces of the USA and China (!) Repel the attacks of the Global Liberation Army (a Middle East terrorist organization).
Final Fantasy X-2 is the sequel to one of the best games in the Final Fantasy universe.
Deus Ex: Invisible War – Despite mixed fan reviews, the game is decent. Excellent stealth mechanics, interesting shootouts, and a dramatic plot come to mind.
It was the TOP 10 best games of 2003, but you should not limit yourself to this, because hundreds of other, no less good projects, which you can recall
in the comments, remained outside the text .
