Miami is a city located on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean in southeast Florida. Miami officially received the status of the city on July 28, 1896, while several hundred people lived in it. In 1940, there were already about 172 thousand people in the city. Now its population is 430 thousand people.
Miami was named after Maya, a Native American tribe who lived in the area until the 17th or 18th century. Miami took its name from Lake Okeechobee, which was called Maya or “big water.”
