The military announced their intention to restore democracy and seize power. A few hours later, the four rebels were arrested, one managed to escape.
The family of incumbent President Ali Bongo has ruled the country since 1967. His father Omar Bongo served as president for over 40 years. Currently, the President of Gabon is in Morocco, where he is undergoing treatment after a stroke.
