Pope Francis donated more than 15 million euros to residents of the Ukrainian part of Donbass. It is reported by Interfax-Ukraine.
“This action was announced so that Ukrainians do not feel lonely and abandoned. It was aimed at those who are victims of the war in the east, to those areas in which people simply survived, ”said Archbishop Claudio Gugerototti, a representative of the head of the Vatican in Ukraine.
The Pope urged all Catholics of Europe to help the affected Ukrainians. The fundraising campaign was called “Dad for Ukraine.” The parishioners managed to collect 11 million euros, another 5 million pontiff added from their personal funds. 6 million euros were spent on heat in residential buildings, 8 million on the purchase of medical, hygienic and food products, another million on psychosocial support for children and adults.
The organizers of the action noted that residents of only that part of the Donbass, which is under the control of Ukraine, received financial support. Philanthropists faced difficulties in spreading aid in the territory of the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Lugansk people’s republics. The Catholics were able to negotiate with the Red Cross, which on their behalf provides the DPR and LPR with products and medicines.
In 2016, the Pope has already donated six million euros to the Ukrainians. The money was intended for two million residents of Donetsk, Lugansk, Kharkov and Dnepropetrovsk, regardless of religious, confessional or ethnic affiliation.
