Moscow will be voiced this idea during the next negotiations between the countries on a peace treaty.

Previously, Japan considered the South Kuriles occupied territory since the Second World War, so Tokyo reserved the right to seek compensation for the seizure of land. Now the authorities of the country are doubtful about this, believing that such claims will complicate the dialogue with Russia.

Following the end of World War II, a peace treaty was not concluded between Moscow and Tokyo. The main obstacle for its signing was the unresolved territorial dispute around the southern part of the Kuriles – the islands of Iturup, Kunashir, Shikotan and Habomai.

The Japanese side calls the Southern Kuriles “northern territories” and does not recognize Russian sovereignty over them. Moscow, in turn, does not recognize the very fact of a territorial dispute.
