Ukraine should attempt to pass warships through the Kerch Strait, having previously prepared for this step. About this in an interview with UAportal said the former deputy chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Lieutenant-General of the Reserve Igor Romanenko .
He pointed out that now there are two options for the development of events. “If our warships pass through the Kerch Strait, it means, in this way, we will prove that Putin’s election was the cause of the incident, because this time our ships went the same way,” Romanenko said.
In the event that Ukrainian ships are stopped by Russian border guards, Moscow’s position will be “disavowed,” Romanenko said. “I believe that the new attempts [of passage through the Kerch Strait] should be carried out, but with the installation of video and audio controls and, starting from the exit from Odessa, to broadcast all the teams, all negotiations with all Russian structures. And the allies will help us with fixing the passage from space. Having prepared, you can get a certain result, ”he is convinced.
“With this approach, Russia finds itself in a rather difficult situation. From the military-political point of view, this is a win-win option for Ukraine, because it demonstrates that the Sea of Azov is not a Russian lake, but an area for use by two states, ”the reserve lieutenant-general said.
In late December, a statement that the Ukrainian court will go through the Kerch Strait, made the Minister of Defense of Ukraine Stepan Poltorak . In the same month, the Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of the Republic, Alexander Turchinov, made a similar statement . “If we stop and retreat, Russia will actually fulfill its task of seizing the Sea of Azov,” he stressed.
On November 25, the FSB border control detained three ships of the Naval Forces of Ukraine in the Kerch Strait area – the boats Berdyansk and Nikopol, as well as the tug Yana Kapu, which crossed the Russian border, did not respond to the demands to stop and made dangerous maneuvers.
Ukraine considered the incident an act of military aggression, Russia regarded the actions of Kiev as a provocation. In Russia, a criminal case was opened on violation of the state border, 24 Ukrainian sailors were arrested for two months and transferred to Moscow.
