Attempt of military coup in Gabon failed

In Gabon, they arrested Lieutenant Kelly Ondo Obiang, who led an attempted military coup in the country. It is reported by Reuters , citing government spokesman Guy-Bertrand Marangus. He stressed that the situation in the republic returned to normal within a few hours.

Earlier on Monday, January 7, it became known that the military tried to seize a state radio station in the African capital. They managed to appeal to the people and declare their dissatisfaction with the actions of the President of Gabon.

The military announced their intention to restore democracy and seize power. A few hours later, the four rebels were arrested, one managed to escape.

The family of incumbent President Ali Bongo has ruled the country since 1967. His father Omar Bongo served as president for over 40 years. Currently, the President of Gabon is in Morocco, where he is undergoing treatment after a stroke.
