South Korea and the United States signed an agreement that provides for an increase in the cost of Seoul for the maintenance of the American military on the Korean Peninsula. This is reported by the local news agency Yonhap.
Thus, in 2019, South Korea will allocate about $ 890 million for the maintenance of 28.5 thousand soldiers from the United States, which is 8.2% more than the amount of 2018.
As the agency notes, the agreement has not yet formally entered into force – the South Korean parliament must ratify it. The previous contract was valid from 2014 to 2018, the South Korean authorities hoped to extend the agreement for 3-5 years, but at the request of the American side, the contract was signed only for a year, clarify Yonhap and Reuters .
US President Donald Trump has repeatedly stated that the maintenance of the military on the Korean Peninsula is costly for the US, but he stressed that there is no question of the withdrawal of troops.
